Emidio Pepe – Winery
If there are any producers in Abruzzo which can truly be considered “Terroir Producers”, Emidio Pepe is surely one of them. Minute attention to detail, traditional winemaking methods and over a century of experience passed on from one generation to the next is what makes Pepe’s wines as sought after as they are – and not always easy to find.
L’azienda Vinicola Emidio Pepe is located in Torano Nuovo in the province of Teramo and was founded in 1964. The winery is sandwiched between the Adriatic Sea and Apennin mountain range which makes for ideal and very interesting climatic conditions for growing Montepulciano and Trebbiano grapes. The evening cooling effect offered by the mountain and sea air during the hot summers helps extend the ripening period adding to complexity and quality of the wines.
Emidio Pepe cultivates 6 hectares (approx. 15 acres) of vines, all organic and the harvesting is all done by hand with strict grape selection. If you’ve never heard of “handmade” wines, look no further as these are a perfect example – practices such as leaving wines in Demijohns for decades before being bottled, racking by hand, not adding sulphur to wines, crushing Trebbiano grapes by foot and destemming red grapes by hand just to name a few.
Emidio Pepe wines are a fine example of what can be achieved with the Trebbiano and Montepulciano grapes – one can honestly say, it’s not easy to find such a raw expression, especially in today’s day and age of industrialisation. These wines are anything but “pizza & pasta wines” and some will argue that they are too wild and difficult to tame but I’ll tell you this: if you have the opportunity to purchase the one or other Emidio Pepe bottle, do so. They truly are worth the experience.
